the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 is coming.

Big news: Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale is in the works, and it’s going to be the last chapter of this intense story. Things are quite tangled up for June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) after the events of the previous season.

June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) was last seen escaping to Canada as the situation there started resembling the oppressive Gilead regime

Her husband is gone, and she’s still far from reuniting with her daughter. When the show returns for its final episodes, June will have a lot on her plate.

But that’s not all;

Season 6 will also lay the groundwork for a sequel series called The Testaments. If you’re curious about how they’ll pull that off and what else is in store for the show’s grand finale, check out our detailed guide below. We’ve got theories, the latest quotes from the cast, and all the juicy details about the release date.

Will The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 be released on Hulu

The Handmaid’s Tale used to release new seasons every year on Hulu, but things changed due to pandemic-related delays during the production of season 4. Since then, there have been quite lengthy gaps between seasons. Season 4 to season 5 took about a year and three months, but it looks like we might have to wait even longer based on the latest filming updates.

To add to the uncertainty, ongoing strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA have halted much of Hollywood’s activities.

Previously, our best guess was that we might see something around mid-2024, but in all honesty, it could take even longer. This is particularly true because Elisabeth Moss has mentioned that this final season will be the most significant one yet.

“It feels like it’s going to be so long until you guys get to see anything else, and I apologize personally for that. But every season we do keeps getting bigger, and it takes more time to create each time. And because it’s the last season, we really want to ensure it turns out exactly as we envision it.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 plot

While there aren’t any official plot details for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 just yet, the cliffhanger at the end of season 5 left us with some burning questions. In season 5, we witnessed Canada becoming more like Gilead, with authorities tightening their grip on citizens.

In the finale, June and Luke realized they needed to escape the country urgently. Unfortunately, things took a tragic turn when Luke defended June from a violent truck driver, leading to the driver’s fatal injuries and Luke’s arrest by Canadian authorities. June had to flee with her daughter Nichole.

As she embarked on her journey out of the country, she discovered that Serena and her baby were also on the same train. Given their ongoing conflicts throughout the season, this could make for an intriguing dynamic when the show returns. Meanwhile, Luke and June’s other daughter, Hannah, remains trapped in Gilead, Nick has made it to Canada, and Commander Lawrence is working on creating Gilead 2.0, known as New Bethlehem.

Executive producer Bruce Miller hinted that we might not see a significant time jump in the upcoming season. He mentioned, “We don’t tend to jump very much in time because my brain doesn’t work that way. I’m like, ‘What happens next?'”

In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miller teased that Nick and June’s relationship will be a central focus in the final season. He described it as the most romantic Nick/June season ever, where they spend the entire time trying to convince themselves that they don’t need each other. However, their efforts ultimately fail, and they remain deeply in love, unable to think of anything else.

One important update is that Bruce Miller will not be the showrunner for season 6, which adds an interesting twist to the show’s production.
